Discover the volcanic panoramas and coastal charms of Central America. In this luxury yacht expedition, skirt the verdant Pacific coasts of Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Seek out Maya saints, visit UNESCO-listed archaeological sites, and tread through cloud forests and over magma-lit mountainsides.

When to go:
January – March

Land in Managua in southern Nicaragua where you’ll be escorted to your yacht by your captain and expert guide. With your first night moored on the Pacific, you’ll awake for a helicopter ride to Ometepe Island in the center of volcano-ringed Lake Nicaragua.

Discover this volcanic island’s black-sand beaches and the wild and wooded Charco Verde Reserve. Spot howler monkeys on bending branches as you hike the trails before arriving at a secluded beach and a delicious lunch set up by your crew. Afterward, reach the island’s heart—a natural spring called Ojo de Agua or the ‘Eye of Water’.

Following an invigorating swim, travel to see the 2000-year-old petroglyphs carved into stone on Magdalena Farm—evidence of the island’s former civilization.

Rise before dawn and disembark your yacht to explore the Masaya Volcano. You’ll discover this park’s lava tubes and culturally significant caves while the sunrise tints the sky gold. Travel to the Masaya artisans’ market in the lowlands. The local artisans, creating ceramics, handmade shoes, and hammocks, will welcome you with a demonstration of their skills.

Afterward, travel to the Catarina Hills for a visit to the famous white villages. Soak up the astounding panoramas of the Mombacho Volcano and Apoyo Lake.

Your culture-filled day will round off with a visit to the colonial streets of Granada. After an exploration of the cobblestoned lanes and fascinating pirate history of this lakeside town, you’ll reach your docked vessel for a Michelin-quality dinner situated on the aft deck.

Arise the next morning for a day of adventure on Central America’s youngest volcano, Cerro Negro. As you crunch up its sandy trails, you’ll catch the whiff of sulfur in the breeze. After taking in the 360-degree views at the summit, put on a safety suit and goggles before flying down the mountainside on an ash board.

Day of thrills complete, relax with sundowners on your yacht. As you dine, your crew will handle the necessary paperwork ahead of your cruise north to Honduras.

Awake to the view of Honduras’ beautiful tropical shoreline. Once you’ve enjoyed a relaxed breakfast on board, you’ll transfer to the birding utopia of Lake Yojoa. Look out for its over 375 different species amid the hanging vines as you hike the trails.

See ruins reclaimed by nature, sparkling jungle falls and inviting thermal springs. Discover the subterranean world as well when you descend into a cave network.

Swap the boots for tubes—or just go for a swim—as you arrive at the nearly 150ft high Pulhapanzak Falls. Transfer to a helicopter for a bird’s eye view of this remarkable cascade.

See Comayagua, formerly the capital of Honduras and a city with a diverse and colorful history. Arrive back at your yacht for dinner accompanied by the Latin rhythms of local musicians. Expert local dancers will be on hand to help you learn the bachata and salsa on the comfort of your own deck.

Your next destination is the UNESCO-listed Copan Maya ruins. You’ll follow in the footsteps of Maya priests, walking through the acropolis and ascending the Hieroglyphic Stairway. Scarlet macaws glide overhead as you witness the site’s famous carved stelae.

Ride out to a hot spring on horseback for a muscle-soothing dip. Afterward, taste coffee varieties on a visit to a nearby coffee farm. Upon returning to your vessel, begin the journey up the Pacific Coast to El Salvador. While you relax, your crew will take care of the paperwork.

You’ll awake to El Zonte across the water. This boho El Salvadorean town is famous for its right-hand point break serving up superb waves all year. Unwind, surf, and dine on vibrant local cuisine. Whatever your skill level, you’ll appreciate the surf found here, with expert guides leading you to the best break for your experience. Look out for turtles trying to steal your wave.

Relax over several days in El Zonte, exploring your vessel’s toy chest, snorkeling the translucent water, and keeping an eye out for breaching whales. Race the onboard jetski or try water skiing to ramp up the adrenaline. Take care of yourself with regular deep tissue massages from the onboard masseuse.

Visit the country’s highest volcano—Santa Ana—ensconced in mountainous cloud forest. Explore the Cerro Verde National Park, leaving your bootmarks in the damp earth as you navigate epic craters, volcanic slopes, and forested hillsides.

Reaching the volcano’s summit, look out over the lush park encircling the crater lake of Coatepeque. Arrive at the steaming, bubbling lagoon, heated to over 212°F.

Travel to the Apaneca hills in the west for an El Salvadorean cultural immersion amid the beautiful towns that comprise the Ruta de Las Flores. Enjoy the buzz of local markets—and the local coffee—before returning to your yacht with a haul of produce to be transformed by your onboard chef into a memorable showcase for national flavors.

El Salvador’s largest national park, coastal El Imposible on the edge of the Pacific in Ahuachapan. An endangered ecosystem home to diverse wildlife, it’s a stunning place to explore. In the heart of the forest, your crew will set up a wild picnic to restore your energy.  If the heat is too much, find one of the park’s eight rivers for a refreshing dip. Return for sunset cocktails and dinner on your yacht as you begin your next cruise north to Guatemala.

Rise to find the Guatemalan coastline greeting you. Fly to the country’s verdant interior to see the fomenting Pacaya Volcano, its smoking clearly visible as you get closer. You’ll land on Pacaya’s foothills for a trek through its encircling pines before making your way to the scree and moonscape of its higher elevations. Spot bubbling magma, steaming vents, and smell the sulfurous air. As you climb higher, take in the views over the northern volcanoes and lush Pacific lowlands.

Arrive in Antigua—a city of brightly painted Spanish colonial architecture, rich tradition, and delicious cuisine.

Dive into the city’s comedores and, eating alongside locals, try the delicious local cuisine. Your native chef and guide will provide the cultural background to these more-ish morsels as you dip into the busy community market for tasters. As evening falls, return to your yacht for a final night of sundowners, dinner on deck, and local music as you watch the sun sink into the Pacific.

Discover Lake Atitlan as you navigate its waters in a rustic, traditional boat. After admiring the views of the Guatemalan highlands, you’ll arrive at a lakefront village for a cultural immersion with the indigenous people who live here.

After learning about their way of life, you’ll begin a guide-led search for the Maya folk saint Maximon at San Juan Village. The saint’s residence changes annually, with a different member of the brotherhood given the honor of hosting each year. Once you’ve found him, you’ll witness a shaman performing rituals on local residents. You may also be led in your own personal service. Return to your yacht for your final night before your journey home.
