Transfer by helicopter from Vilanculos to the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’—the Bazaruto Archipelago. A protected national park, this string of islands offers pristine mangrove forests, teeming coral reefs, and immaculate white-sand beaches.

Barefoot luxury paradise Beguerra is the pick of the five islands. Explore its beautiful landscape on horseback before cooling off with your steed in the translucent waves. Leaving your luxury accommodation, island-hop the archipelago, stopping to see the ruins of Hotel Santa Carolina on Deserted Paradise Island.

Join conservationists on a scuba diving or snorkeling expedition to witness the dugongs grazing on the seagrass. After learning about the initiatives in place to protect these gentle sirenians, have a blissful picnic on an empty beach.

With its reputation as the epicenter of big game fishing in the Indian Ocean, Bazaruto is a superb place to try this exciting sport.

On to Gorongosa National Park—a hotspot for the country’s biodiversity and home to rising populations of lions, elephants, and zebra. You’ll embark on game drives into this conservation success story, as well as canoe the Pungue River spotting its eclectic bird life bright amid its riverside forest.

Take a laid-back boat safari to Lake Urema. This body of water is home to crocodiles and hippos and offers superb photographic opportunities.

Into the north of the country, where the 12 islands of the remote Quirimbas Archipelago offer an opportunity to venture into the unknown. Discover the intriguing melting pot of Ibo Island comprising Portuguese, Swahili, Indian, and African cultures. Hear the stories of pirates and prisoners as you wander its ancient buildings and forts.

Take a dhow for a leisurely snorkeling expedition amid its translucent seas, spending a night on an uninhabited island with a fly camp set up for your visit. Seek out dolphins on a speedboat before diving in for a thrilling experience with these playful mammals. Afterward, with an expert guide, learn the skill and art of spearfishing.

Niassa Game Reserve is one of Africa’s largest and remotest protected areas. It covers strikingly varied terrain, incorporating the dramatic Inselberg Mountains, Miombo woodland, and endless floodplains. It’s the perfect destination for a superb safari without the crowds.

With expert guides, you’ll strike out into this incredible wilderness on foot to see the restored African wild dog population—among many other species. Glide along the Lugenda River in a canoe, pausing for refreshments on its sandy banks.

Commune with the raw landscape with a dramatic finale as you climb an Inselberg. Have dinner before sleeping in the wild with a comfortable bedroll, linen, and nothing else between you and the star-washed African night.
