Design

Zannier Hotels Sonop is constructed on top of boulders, resulting in some seriously awe-inspiring views over the otherworldly landscape. Oozing 1920’s British colonial style, the property comprises ten tented suites and a main tented guest area. The hotel effortlessly captures old-world charm, with each tent kitted out with ornate objects and antiques (think binoculars, mirrors, trunks and gramophones). Any new furnishings have been created by local artisans using Namibian materials that tie in seamlessly with the surrounds.

Despite its name, the Namib Desert isn’t as dry as it sounds. There are some brilliant activities here, so spend a morning or afternoon on a scenic drive to sight wildlife gathered around watering holes, or enjoy the landscape on foot with a hike around the hills. There are also stables for guests to traverse the desert on horseback. As night falls, spend an evening stargazing using one of the myriad telescopes dotted around the tents. There is also an open-air cinema, a spa with two couple-sized treatment rooms that uses indigenous ingredients, a well-equipped fitness centre and swimming pool.

Cuisine

An ode to the explorers of the 20s, meals are a silver-service affair with candelabras and white-gloved waiters adding to the elegant ambiance. At 8pm exactly, guests are invited to a gala-style dinner that changes daily and uses as much fresh local produce as possible. Dishes are a marriage of Mediterranean and Namibian cuisines, so expect fresh fish, homemade stews and traditional desserts. Or, to make the most of the beautiful locale, take breakfast atop the Sonop Dune.
