Design

Delight in a private en-suite banda at Virunga Lodge and soak up the feeling of ultimate escapism from its secluded setting. Named after Rwandan lakes, each stone and tile building is wonderfully rustic with tasteful local touches, thatched features, and splashes of colour throughout the African textiles. From a private terrace, savour hypnotic views and cosy up by a roaring fire on chillier evenings.

Two bandas offer more deluxe accommodation with a private sitting room, more refined interiors, a hot tub, and a larger terrace overlooking striking volcanoes and lakes. Stroll along winding stone paths to reach the main area which invites you into its timeless structure with a central, welcoming fireplace. Appreciate fine stone and wood features and furniture made from locally-sourced materials. The communal table and cushioned chairs encourage a friendly, interactive environment for guests to swap stories and enjoy hearty, mouth-watering meals together.

Sustainability

Virunga Lodge's 'One Sheep per Family' project provides 140 local families with a sheep each, giving them natural fertiliser for crops and extra income from selling lambs. The lodge is powered by solar energy, reducing its environmental impact.

Why we love it

The panoramic views from Virunga Lodge showcase some of Rwanda’s best rainforest scenery where you can witness cloud blankets sweep through the valley and look out for the region’s endemic bird species. Some of the world’s best bird watching can be admired here due to its naturally wild and luscious terraced gardens.
