LOCATION

Set within 136,000 acres of dramatic countryside between Lake Wanaka and Queenstown, Mahu Whenua Homestead is finally reached after a joggling journey up an unmetalled track. It’s well worth the effort for the far-reaching views over the mountains and grasslands, the serenity, and the luxurious accommodation.

Stay in the elegantly decorated suites with their king-size beds and private bathrooms or try the woodland cottage for some added privacy and picturesque views of Motatapu Valley.

The shared Homestead areas and spacious and comfortable, with timber beams, exposed brick, and a pair of huge fireplaces keeping any chill in the alpine air outside of the full-length windows. Sheepskins and pieces by local artists add intimacy and color. The creative and refined cuisine uses produce grown on the local land whenever possible, and the dishes are paired with a strong Central Otago-focused wine list.

The homestead, sleeping up to 12, is available for an entire home buyout.

WHAT MAKES THIS HOTEL UNIQUE?

It’s the country’s largest private conservation project. Mahu Whenua’s owner is in the process of restoring its 136,000 acres to their original state through sustainable farming practices, plant regeneration, and a native bird breeding program.

You can learn about their initiatives as part of their selection of experiences that really make the most of this privileged perch in the gorgeous New Zealand wilderness.
