HERO Ethiopia Limalino Bedroom Interior

This sustainable, boutique lodge is set in the Simien Mountains National Park in northern Ethiopia. Fourteen rooms surround a central lodge (slightly higher than the rooms, so offering the very best views), with the grounds a lattice of winding paths and trees.

The rooms are minimalist, comfortable (especially for the region), and offer private bathrooms and king-sized beds with handmade Hypnos mattresses.  Even more hypnotic are the huge windows looking out over the mountains.

The lodge is strikingly contemporary in its design for the country. Stripped back and chic, it was designed by an Italian architect based in Addis Ababa.

However, this modernity is balanced by rustic touches, such as the use of rammed-earth walls—a North African technique that creates structures that blend perfectly with the surrounding earth that they’re built from.

In keeping with this hybrid philosophy, the restaurant menu offers Ethiopia’s finest dishes alongside European favorites. Eat inside or take your meal on the terrace beside the fire while watching eagles wheeling overhead.
