HERO Japan Hoshinoya Kyoto Aerial

LOCATION

As you leave thriving Kyoto, your boat drifts down the Oi River, the peacefulness enhanced by the diving dart of a kingfisher, before the river bends and the grey rooftops of Hoshinoya Kyoto come into view. On the waterside, located at the foot of a steep, forested river gorge, this is an immaculately conceived retreat.

Within you’ll find 25 elegantly built rooms with delicately carved wooden floors, king-sized beds, and sofas. The gold patterned karakami wallpaper catches the light from the large glass windows that invite the Arashiyama woodland in.

Alongside contemporary comforts and spacious bathrooms, the pavilions retain the sense of sophistication cultivated by Suminokura—the 17th-century tycoon who built the retreat.

WHAT MAKES THIS HOTEL UNIQUE?

From the iron lanterns that light the moss-limned stone walkways to the lashed bamboo fences, every detail has been considered.

No less attention to detail has been lavished on the Japanese dining experience found here. Reflecting the seasons the Japanese menu, featuring Western accents, is designed to stimulate and surprise. Opt for traditional Japanese hot vegetable broth for breakfast or something American-style if you prefer.

There is also a full room service menu if you’d like to retreat within the retreat, eating from the comfort of your pavilions while wearing the raw-silk robes provided.

The peace only deepens in the on-site traditional Kyoto spa. Cleanse and revitalize before meditating under the guidance of an expert. For a profound experience, settle in the Zen rock garden beneath the bright night sky absorbing the sounds of nature.
