Rocky Mountains reach ranch lands, Chico Basin Ranch Colorado

LOCATION

About half an hour’s drive east from Colorado Springs, Colorado, Chico Basin Ranch’s principal enterprise is raising cattle. Nestled in one of the largest uninterrupted stretches of shortgrass and sand-sage prairies left in the United States, the estate also represents an important habitat for diverse populations of birds, pronghorn, deer, fish, insects, prairie dogs, coyotes, badgers, and much more.

With conservation central to its ethos, the ranch works closely with conservation organizations to take advantage of science-based land management methods, such as planned grazing techniques. The restoration of vegetative and wildlife ecologies is one of Chico’s highest priorities. It achieves this through its ranching activities, mimicking the symbiotic relationship between the North American High Plains grasslands and the great bison herds of the past.

WHAT MAKES THIS HOTEL UNIQUE?

You’ll immerse yourself fully in ranch life, saddling up at sunrise to gather and move pasture herds, before spending the afternoon checking the animal’s water or repairing fences. You’ll lodge in a newly renovated, early-20th building with three-foot thick adobe walls. With double or authentic bunk style beds, each room comes complete with a bathroom, full kitchen, living room, and bags of American charm.

Although it’s not all hard work. Adjacent to your accommodation is a spring-fed lake and wetland. It’s home to waterfowl and perfect for warmwater fishing and an energizing swim. Spend an afternoon sketching, writing, or enjoying a siesta in the shade.
