&Beyond Mnemba Island
Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania
A resort set on its own island paradise in the Indian Ocean. While you sink your toes into the warm white sands, the palms are rustled by a coconut-scented breeze, and the gentle rhythms of the sea wash the coral submerged just offshore. Romance and relaxation—true R&R.
Why we Love It
The island has its own adorable antelope. The shy Ader’s duiker is an endangered species brought to the island as part of a conservation drive in 2005. It adds a touch of magic to the resort with the possibility of chance sighting of Africa’s rarest antelope.
Having a private candelit dinner on the beach, with nothing but the sights and sounds of an island paradise at sunset for company, can make you feel like you’re the last people on the planet.
Your barefoot luxury paradise is found in the Zanzibar Archipelago, about a mile off the northeast coast of Unguja—the archipelago’s largest island. Measuring under a mile in its circumference, Mnemba Island is an exclusive swatch of white sand and emerald jungle set into the electric blue Indian Ocean.
With the resort occupying the island’s entirety, it’s the perfect place to play at Castaway without any actual hardship (plus an actual butler). Look out at the gorgeous sea views from the deep sugar-white armchairs on your private veranda while nibbling on sliced fruit and a basket of still-warm bread.
Contributing to your Robinson Crusoe fantasy is your banda’s thatched palm leaf roof, which shelters a space of elegant simplicity. The focus is on the supremely comfortable, cruise-liner-sized four-poster bed, its engraved headboard a gorgeous touch of African authenticity.
WHAT MAKES THIS HOTEL UNIQUE?
Besides being the kind of destination the memory of which will make you glassy-eyed, &Beyond Mnemba Island’s situation means that it’s only a short stroll to some of Africa’s finest diving opportunities.
If you’re keen to learn, head over to the resort’s on-site Padi Dive Center. Or just stick to snorkeling if you prefer to feel the warm sun on your back while gazing at the marine kaleidoscope below. Arrive anywhere between April to August, and you’ve hit peak turtle season.
