LOCATION
Ensconced in the emerald hills of the West Lake District, just over half an hour’s drive from Hangzhou, Amanfayun is a beautifully rendered hotel in the shape of a classic Chinese village.
The rooms and suites (it’s also possible to spread out over two floors) are dotted around the village providing a genuine sense of privacy, and each abode has its own particular identity. A unifying theme found across the contemporary interiors is the references to the tea-growing heritage of the former village.
WHAT MAKES THIS HOTEL UNIQUE?
From its authentic village setting to its fabulous location near West Lake and various Buddhist sites, Amanfayun is a luxury hotel that also manages to act as a full-blown cultural immersion.
Its in-house offerings are excellent, from learning traditional Chinese art forms to experiencing the ancient healing techniques at the wellness pavilions. Eat what the local monks are dining on from the on-site Vegetarian House (which really does feed the neighboring monastery) with dining times harmonized with the monks’ prayer schedule.
If you want to eat on your own schedule, try dim sum at the Steam House or dig into dishes based on ancient Chinese recipes at Hangzhou House.
